3 killed as Bayelsa community clash with Police over varsity closure.

YENAGOA—THREE persons were feared dead yesterday, at Amassoma in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, following a clash between security operatives and protesting community women and youths over the continued closure of the state-owned Niger Delta University, NDU. The clash, which reportedly started in the early hours of the day at the university’s gate, was said to have left five others seriously injured. The situation in the community, according to sources, became tense as sporadic gunshots and fired teargas canisters triggered panic among residents, forcing many to stay indoors.  Trouble Trouble started in the early hours of the day when a detachment of security operatives forcefully opened the gate of the institution for staff to access their offices without clearance from the angry indigenes. Address grievances of NDU students, IYC tells Dickson.

YENAGOA—Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, worldwide, has called on Bayelsa State governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, to address the grievances of students of the state-owned Niger Delta University, Amassoma, which led to a protest and eventual closure of the institution. Dickson The university has lately experienced, among other challenges, workers’ protests against their purported sack as well as the massive protest by students against the alleged increment in tuition fees by the authorities.  Reacting to Wednesday’s closure of the university by the senate of the institution, the Ijaw Youth Council, led by Eric Omare, expressed serious concern over the development. Ijaw female graduates move to promote Ijaw girl-child education.

WARRI— IJAW Female Graduate Association of Nigeria, has called on leaders of Ijaw nation to encourage educational pursuit of the Ijaw girl child. President of the body, Mrs Ebiakpo Obanyedo, made the call, when members of the group paid a courtesy visit on the Chairman of Burutu Local Government Area of the state, Mr Godknows Angele.
